I am currently at university of Carlisle doing a one year foundation course, where i have recently discovered that my specialism is illustration. I never thought my work was illustration and had this mindset that illustration was just for children's books and the back of newspapers. However when i reviewed my work i started to realise, with the help of my tutors, that i should pursue illustration. The way i lay out my sketchbooks and how i vision ideas is more illustration than fine art-which i originally thought i was.
The work on this blog is from my time on foundation. The first body of work was my first brief i had in illustration, where i had a box of random items and i had to illustrate them in 50 different drawings using a variety of media's and methods. This brief really helped me in broadening my approaches to creating work, using techniques that i had never used before.
The second brief was a 3 dimensional typography based one were i had to illustrate words by their meaning. In this instance i chose the word aura and placed the letters on top of a light box to give the word a glow and ambience-i also got to experiment with different fonts and create my own.
The logo piece is from my first visual communication brief i got. The idea was to get a well known logo and manipulate it to represent a charity of your choice. I chose the lg logo and changed it into an elderly person holding a waking stick to represent help the aged. I really enjoyed this brief, it made you think on your feet as we only had two weeks to complete.
I am interested in this course as i want to develop my skills as a illustrator. I want to learn new techniques, new ways of thinking and solving ideas. The experience of working alongside other illustrators is also really appealing as i like to get inspiration not only of artists but other students who are in the same situation and stage of their career as me.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my blog and i hope you enjoyed the work i have created.
